Butterflies and their Host Plants

<<Back to Backyard Habitat

More than 100 species of butterflies can reasonably be expected to take nectar in a garden.  However, some of these butterflies prefer host plants that are not suited to culture in the well-groomed garden.  Some butterfly caterpillars prefer grasses and weeds.  Nevertheless,
there is a long list of butterflies that will carry out their complete life cycles in a garden setting.
Please note: When more than one plant is listed as a host for a particular species,
it is common to find that in a given locality, only one of those plants is selected by
the local butterfly population of that species.
