Small
animals live on the edge.
The
edge of a woods or a field, that is.
Edge is the habitat most suitable to various small wild creatures. Observe
a field after it has been
cut over. The first succession of growth
is varied, full of flowers
and berry-producing plants. These
same plants disappear as
trees take over and shade them out.
However, small trees, or widely spaced trees, shrubs and a variety
of
perennials and annuals make
the perfect combination for small
wildlife
habitat. They provide both
a diversity of food bearing plants
and
the density of plant growth
that many small creatures seek
for shelter
and nesting
or brooding. |
