The members of the animal kingdom that are likely to take up residence in your garden belong to the phylum animalia, class aves, and the phylum anthropoda--otherwise known as birds and insects. Butterflies are the insects that will receive the attention here, although many other harmless, as well as beneficial, insects will be attracted to the garden as well. Among them are bees, useful pollinators; hawkmoths, often mistaken for hummingbirds when they come out to sip nectar at dusk; and non-menacing spiders, like the garden spider that is sometimes called a writing spider because of the zig-zaggy marks it makes in the center of its web. The birds that can be expected are known as Songbirds. Isn't it great that the birds that prefer
to live near human dwellings also like to sing melodious songs? |
